At the age of eleven Gijs Idema (1996) picked up a guitar for the first time and from that moment on his love for the instrument never stopped. After the usual pop and rock bands Gijs became more interested in jazz. Especially when he was introduced to musicians like Wes Montgomery and Charlie Parker. This was also the point where Gijs decided to become a musician and play and compose music for the rest of his life.
When Gijs was seventeen he was admitted to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam where he had lessons with Jesse van Ruller, Reinier Baas, Ben van Gelder and Martijn van Iterson. After four years of studying Gijs concluded his bachelor cum laude (with a 10) and moved to New York City to pursue his masters at the Manhattan School of Music where he is currently having lessons with Christopher Rosenberg, Arturo O'Farrill, Dave Liebman and Ron Carter.
Being known as a sideman as well as a bandleader Gijs formed his own trio in 2014. The Gijs Idema Trio won the first price of the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours (2014), the Leidse Jazz Award (2016) and the Expression of Art Award (2017). Since their existence the trio has played at most of the major venues and festivals in The Netherlands as well as exploring the venues abroad in Germany, Belgium and France.
In 2017 the trio released their first album ''Squares'' which was recorded at Fattoria Musica in Osnabrück. In the past Gijs played at venues like Bimhuis, LantarenVenster and Tivoli Vredenburg and festivals like North Sea Jazz Festival, Festival Jazz International Rotterdam and Gateshead International Jazz Festival as well as touring with Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest in Germany and the UK.
